सुप्रसिद्ध कथक नर्तक बिरजू महाराज का 04 फरवरी को जन्म हुआ था। वह एक ऐसी शख्सियत थे, जो घुंघरू की झंकार से दर्शकों का दिल मोह लेते थे। जब बिरजू महाराज नृत्य करते थे, तो उनके पैरों में बंधे घुंघरू भी बात किया करते थे। एक नर्तक के लिए ताल और घुंघरू का तालमेल करना आम बात है। लेकिन बिरजू महाराज घुंघरू की झनकार से दर्शकों को मनमोहित कर लेते थे। उन्होंने कथक को न सिर्फ भारत बल्कि पूरे विश्व में एक अलग मुकाम पर पहुंचाया था।
उत्तर प्रदेश के लखनऊ में 04 फरवरी 1938 को बिरजू महाराज का जन्म हुआ था। इनके पिता का नाम जगन्नाथ महाराज और मां का नाम अम्मा महाराज था। जब वह 3 साल के थे, तो उनके पिता ने नृत्य की प्रतिभा को देखते दीक्षा देना शुरू कर दिया था। जब वह 9 साल के थे तो उनके पिता की मृत्यु हो गई थी। फिर बिरजू महाराज ने चाचा आचार्य शंभू और लच्छू महाराज से दीक्षा लेना शुरूकर दिया। फिर कुछ सालों बाद वह दिल्ली आ गए और संगीत भारती में बच्चों को कथक सिखाना शुरूकर दिया था।
कथक के अलावा बिरजू महाराज को पखावज नाल, सितार और तबला आदि वाद्य यंत्र में महारत हासिल किया था। वहीं बिरजू महाराज एक अच्छे गायक होने के साथ कवि और चित्रकार थे। कथक को बढ़ावा देने के लिए उन्होंने नृत्य स्कूल ‘कलाश्रम’ की स्थापना की। इस स्कूल में कथक के अलावा इससे संबंधित विषयों पर शिक्षा दी जाती थी। उन्होंने कथक को एक अलग पहचान देने का काम किया था। हालांकि बिरजू महाराज का सफर लंबा है। इस दौरान उन्होंने कई हिंदी फिल्मों में नृत्य का निर्देशन किया। उन्होंने ‘शतरंज के खिलाड़ी’, ‘दिल तो पागल है’, ‘गदर एक प्रेम कथा’, ‘डेढ़ इश्किया’, ‘देवदास’ के अलावा ‘बाजीराव मस्तानी’ में नृत्य का निर्देशन किया है।
बता दें कि अपने लंबे सफर में बिरजू महाराज ने कई प्रसिद्धियां बटोरी हैं। साल 1986 में उनको पद्म विभूषण, संगीत नाटक अकादमी और कालिदास सम्मान से सम्मानित किया गया था। फिर साल 2002 में लता मंगेशकर पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था। वहीं साल 2012 में बिरजू महाराज को सर्वश्रेष्ठ नृत्य निर्देशन के लिए राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार फिल्म विश्वरूपम से सम्मानित किया गया था। फिर साल 2016 में पंडित बिरजू महाराज को फिल्म ‘बाजीराव मस्तानी’ के गाने रंग दो लाल के लिए फिल्म फेयर से नवाजा गया।
वहीं 17 जनवरी 2022 को बिरजू महाराज ने इस दुनिया को हमेशा के लिए अलविदा कह दिया।
